Frequently Asked Questions

About Project ADEPT

  • What does ADEPT stand for?
    • Advancing the Development of Emotional Proficiencies in Teens
  • What’s the purpose of the study?
    • Our goal is to identify strategies that parents can use to help support the mental and emotional health of their teenage children. Teens are experiencing new and numerous stressors today (academic, social, mental health), and our study focuses on what parents can do to support the well-being of their teens through these challenging times. We’re accomplishing this by enrolling thousands of U.S. families into an anonymous and confidential survey. The survey touches on topics of family relationships, emotional health, physical health, and family resources.
  • Why only teens?
    • This is an in-depth study on families with teens. When it comes to understanding how parents can support their children, teens are perhaps the least well-represented group in the scientific literature. The teenage years are deserving of their own focus because this time of life ushers in many unique challenges, as well as opportunities. This time of life is critical for developing the skills and resiliencies that will help them succeed as adults.

Qualifying for the Survey

  • Can multiple teenage children participate?
    • Yes! Tell your study representative if this is your desire and they can set that up for you.
  • Can my child qualify for the survey if they are turning 12 soon? What if my child just turned 18?
    • Sure, s/he can participate if it’s within a reasonable time frame.

Taking the Survey

  • How long is the survey?
    • The surveys are designed to take between 30 – 45 minutes. Probably closer to 45 if we’re being honest. We realize that this is a time commitment, which is why we’re paying a much larger incentive than most other surveys. The reason for the length of the survey is because our survey represents one of the largest and most comprehensive studies on US families at the moment. There’s a lot to learn about some of the very new challenges we’re facing, such as the pandemic, issues around media and technology, mental health, economics and family finance, race relations, etc.
  • Do I have to answer every question on the survey?
    • While we value your thorough and complete responses, you are not obligated to answer any question that you don’t want to. You can skip those questions and move onto the next ones.
  • Can I start the survey and pick it up and finish later?
    • You don’t have to do this survey in one sitting. If this time commitment feels too long for you, an option you have is to take a break and come back to the survey when you’re ready. If you do this, you’ll just need to make sure to keep the survey open in a separate window on whatever device you’re using. Closing the window will close out your survey and you’d have to start over again.
  • My survey accidentally closed out in the middle and I don’t want to start all over!
    • Contact your study representative. S/he can send you a new link that will bookmark your last location in the survey so you can continue where you left off.
  • How long do I have to complete the survey once I begin?
    • Your anonymous survey link is live for two weeks, but we encourage you to take the survey in one week so it does not get forgotten.

After the Survey

  • When will I receive my compensation?
    • Your amazon e-gift card will be sent within 24 hours of completing your survey. If you still have not received it within 24 hours, contact your study representative by phone, text or email and we will address the issue promptly.
  • Can I take the survey twice?
    • You will only get paid once for taking the survey, so it’s not worth your time to take it twice! However, Project ADEPT will be conducting numerous paid surveys on families like yours until 2027, and you are welcome to participate in those. Tell your study representative know about your interest in future studies and we will put you on our list to be contacted for all of our future surveys.

My Privacy

  • How will my privacy be impacted by taking this survey?
    • Privacy is very important to us, as we’re sure it is to you. For this reason, the links we send you are anonymous links that use a unique de-identified code. This means that none of your identifying information will be attached to your survey responses. Furthermore, all the anonymous data you provide through your survey is stored on an encrypted drive with two-factor authentication that only the immediate research team has access to. No personal information will be reported on or made available to any other party.
